Assistive feeling device for those who are used to only seeing

In the video work “Assistive Feeling Device for Those Who Are Used to Only Seeing,” artist Bon Kim uses thermal imaging technology to reveal the invisible dimensions of life. By employing infrared sensors (FLIR systems), she captures the thermal radiation emitted by humans—a form of energy beyond the visible spectrum. Kim utilizes heat as a universal, non-hierarchical form of energy to explore the deep connections between living beings and their environment, redefining the boundaries between life and non-life.

However, this technology also has military applications, used to locate, monitor, and target life, highlighting its ambivalence. It can serve both protective and destructive purposes, raising ethical concerns about its use.

Kim’s projections of thermal images onto the cold, unlit façade of a building create a powerful metaphor for the fragile relationship between the living and the inanimate. At the same time, the artist draws attention to the dark implications of military uses of this technology: while living bodies stand out due to their heat, the traces of a struck individual vanish from the recording, starkly visualizing the disappearance of life.
