AWARDS

At the end of the Light Art Festival GOLDSTÜCKE on Sunday, October 6, 2024, the award ceremony for the most beautiful pictures of the photography competition LICHTSPIEL took place. For six days, interested parties were able to submit pictures that focused on light. During the art festival from October 2 to 6, all 66 submissions from 36 photographers were displayed as large-format projections on the exterior façade of St. Urbanus. A jury selected three of the submitted photographs that focus on light in a special way.

The jury consisted of Sofia Mellino (independent artist), Feyrouz Nouri (independent curator) as well as Ulrike Weidlich (City of Gelsenkirchen, Cultural Department), Bettina Pelz (GOLDSTÜCKE Artistic Director), Gamze Can (GOLDSTÜCKE Project Coordinator), Lara Lehmann (GOLDSTÜCKE Community Coordinator). The award-winning photographs show in a special way how light and light behavior can be captured with the camera. They all show the Ruhr region in dialog with daylight and artificial light.

Marion Falkowski took the photograph showing the Rheinelbe slag heap in Wattenscheid-Leithe at night. The combination of still and moving picture elements, as used in light painting, is special. It was awarded 1st prize. Daniel Möllers submitted a daylight photograph showing an intersection in Buer. The light from the traffic lights and the passing vehicles are captured as movements of light. The picture was awarded 2nd prize. Heike Seibel took the photo, which shows elements of a steel construction. The night shot shows the colored lighting with shadowed sections of the metal construction. It was awarded 3rd prize.

Andrea Lamest (City of Gelsenkirchen, Department of Culture, Director) praised the diversity and quality of the submissions at the award ceremony and emphasized how this new element of GOLDSTÜCKE has enriched the festival.
