Drift (2024)
“Drift” innovatively combines a classic wind chime with modern laser technology. The work visualizes the invisible force of wind through the movement of physical objects (metal cords) in interaction with light (laser). The use of technical materials and laser technology to depict natural phenomena shows how new technologies can deepen our understanding and perception of nature.
“Drift” shows the constant interaction between material and immaterial elements in our environment. As a site-specific installation, “Drift” reacts to the immediate surroundings, particularly the movement of air and wind. In the context of wind as an ecological force, Liubov Moskvina’s installation gains an additional meaning: in our latitudes, the wind is responsible for the change between high and low-pressure areas. However, climate change is altering the existing wind conditions worldwide. Changing wind systems make extreme weather, such as droughts or heavy rain, increasingly likely.
“Drift” raises awareness of the every day, often overlooked air movements in our immediate surroundings and encourages us to reflect on global climatic changes. The filigree movement of the metal cords in the laser beam thus becomes a metaphor for the fragility and interconnectedness of our ecosystem. The interaction between wind, matter, and light in “Drift” reflects the complex interactions in the atmosphere.
