Monetary Mirrors – Reflecting Identity in the Rise and Fall of Currency
In her video work “Monetary Mirrors,” Shadi Jafarbadi explores the intricate relationship between currency and identity. The projection on the façade of a savings bank, a significant site for financial transactions, becomes a stage for artistic reflection on the transformation money has undergone over time.
Historically, currencies were backed by gold, providing stability and trust. However, in the 20th century, money lost its material foundation and began deriving its value from trust, political power, and global relationships. This shift from tangible security to abstract valuation has impacted the stability and perception of currency in the modern world.
Jafarbadi combines historical and contemporary banknotes in a dynamic video collage, utilizing Karl Gerstner’s layout grid. “Monetary Mirrors” not only reflects the power and problems associated with money but also invites viewers to critically examine the various perspectives on financial crises and their impact on identity and society.
