Shortcut
Where is the journey going? A video performance in the Wadden Sea.
“Shortcut” merges art historical approaches with contemporary issues like migration and identity. In her work, Maaike Meinderstma crosses the Wadden Sea—a vast, ever-changing landscape that serves not only as a physical space but also as a powerful symbol of transformation and danger. This border region, suspended between land and sea, is fluid and unstable. Her footprints in the muddy ground are fleeting, reflecting the transience of her journey.
In Romanticism, landscapes often symbolized inner states; artists like Caspar David Friedrich used nature to explore themes of solitude and impermanence. Meinderstma draws on these influences, applying them to the uncertainties faced by migrants on their perilous journeys.
Walking in the Wadden Sea is dictated by the rhythm of the tides. Here, the tides symbolize the relentless passage of time and change. The moment of low tide, when the Wadden Sea becomes accessible, offers an opportunity to explore the transitional state between safety and danger. Yet this accessibility is temporary, and the returning tide can have fatal consequences.
