The Rituals Before Dawn

The video work “The Rituals Before Dawn” offers a poetic reflection on how to navigate conflict and the power of traditional rituals in a fractured world. Central to the piece is a nighttime ritual practiced in southeastern Congo—a moment of hope, a call for renewal and harmony with nature amidst a society torn by conflict.

The artistic medium—a video combining layered footage with the driving rhythms of Afro House percussion—brings this Congolese ritual into the public space of Gelsenkirchen.

Paul’s work contrasts images of people in Berlin absorbed in their smartphones with those of workers in the conflict-ridden mines of Congo. This juxtaposition reveals the invisible connections between Western consumption and the conflicts fueled by the extraction of rare earth minerals for our technology. Paul’s piece reflects on these complex perspectives, urging a deeper examination of the cultural and economic entanglements of our time. The result is a powerful symbiosis of ritual, prayer, and critique.
