Blue Screens (2024)

“Blue Screens” is a site-specific installation focusing on unusable digital screens. Friedrich Böll examines the interplay of light and technical material when digital processes no longer control the light image. The installation uses the basic building blocks of digital monitors – light sources behind polarization foils – to critically look into digital imaging and its invisible systems.

The title “Blue Screens” alludes to the well-known error message in Microsoft Windows operating systems, where the screen turns blue after a critical system error. This symbolic link between defective digital devices and systemic problems in our technology-dependent society forms a central aspect of the work.

Using electronic waste as artistic material, the artist creates space to examine the down sides of our digital age and encourages a more conscious approach to electronic devices. “Blue Screens (2024)” thus symbolizes the need to find innovative solutions to the growing challenge of electronic waste. The rapidly growing mountain of electronic waste is a pressing global problem. The amount of electronic waste generated worldwide has almost doubled since 2010. What is particularly alarming is that more than three-quarters of this waste is improperly disposed of or recycled. “Blue Screens (2024)” is a commentary on the throwaway mentality of our digital society and a call to think about the life cycle of our electronic devices.
