Hello Seoyeon, I am very excited about what awaits us today and look forward to learning more about your artistic practice and gaining insights into your creative journey. It’s a pleasure to have you here and to talk with you about your ideas and inspirations.
— Do you know Gelsenkirchen? Why did you say yes to GOLDSTÜCKE 2024?
I first learned about Gelsenkirchen while preparing for this exhibition. I felt that exhibiting in a city other than Bremen would be a new and enriching experience, which led me to participate in this exhibition.
— What are particularly interesting aspects of the material/medium?
The most interesting aspect for me is data visualization. In this work as well, I visualized and transformed photos that I personally collected from people.
— What core idea inspired you to create your current work, and what message do you want to convey with it?
The theme of this work is the value of memory. We live in an era where AI technology can manipulate memories to an incredible degree. For instance, deepfake videos can make people believe events that never happened as though they were real. In this context, I visualized the fragility and imperfection of memory through the image of dandelion seeds.
— What are the central aspects of contemporary art for you, and how do you incorporate them into your works?
For me, the most meaningful aspect of contemporary art is the question of “how to use technology.” My constant challenge is to create work that evokes human emotion and feels relatable, even when using technology. In this project, the biggest challenge was softening the inherent rigidity of technology.
— Do you have a favorite work of art from this year’s GOLDSTÜCKE program?
My personal favorite is Spieglein, Spieglein (2024) by Katharina Berndt. I was captivated by the free-flowing drawing style, and its poetic style left a strong impression on me.
